camera obscura experiment no.1

camera obscura experiment no.1
OK, so there we were, bimbling around Edinburgh looking for a vantage point that was high enough to take a photograph of the city from above, looking towards Calton Hill. The castle was closed, so the rooftop viewing platform at the Camera Obscura, top of the Royal Mile, seemed to fit the bill. On the way I mentioned that I’d never seen the camera obscura, to which she said (being a bit of a show-off), "you can make one you know". I said that I did know – or more accurately I sort of did, but I was a bit hazy on the detail – however, it got me thinking. I set to this afternoon in our second bedroom, with not enough cardboard and not enough masking tape, to have a preliminary try at getting this to work. The results were pretty crappy as I couldn’t get the room dark enough, but they’re good enough to warrant developing a better blackout system and a more swept up aperture than the rough hole in a piece of tinfoil that sufficed today! If she reckons she can do better then she can bring it on! I like a challenge.

Oh, just for the record, it turns out that you can’t actually see much of Calton Hill from the Camera Obscura, there’s a bloody great block of chimneys in the way – but I’m glad we went in anyway. Let the camera obscura challenge commence.

I am creating a home for my lovely husband and I. I would never have been able to do it if I still worked full time. Since I have quit my job, I made myself healthy again, conquered hoarding tendencies and got rid of several truck loads of stuff, painted the bedroom, most of the dining and living room, have the hallway taped off and ready to go, have paint samples for the kitchen, curtains made for the windows, replaced all the old windows, made a home office, and now we are hiring a landscaper to get our yard in shape. We are going to have an edible landscape. 😀 No more lawn to battle with, well maybe a small patch, nothing we need a big lawn mower for.
Creating a home.
Next on the list is solar panels, finishing up the painting, and relaxing in the home we created.
